General Abdourahamane Tchiani, leader of the Niger junta, has said the army will hand over power to the civilian government within the next three years.
He stated this in a televised broadcast on Saturday night.
Tchiani made his remarks following a meeting with a team from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which was headed by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the former head of state (rtd).
According to General Tchiani, the junta would appoint a committee within a month to draft the nation's new constitution.
The General underlined that Niger will defend itself if necessary, even though the country does not wish to go to war.
But he also said that there was still room for dialogue.
This is coming on the heels of ECOWAS force readiness to intervene in Niger ‘anytime the order is given’, after a two-day meeting of the regional bloc’s military chiefs in Accra, capital city of Ghana.
